Luke 10:19 (KJV): ”Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
Growing up, there was always an atmosphere of God around the house. My dad would be studying and my mom singing. She would sing all sorts of songs, but some of her favorites were the old gospel hymns. As you can imagine, growing up with parents like that, I was bound to learn a lyric or two. I never knew how important it was to plant those seeds into your children until I started to walk out my faith.
Now, I made mistakes and walked a path that was not intended for me, but with the grace of God and the people He put around me, I was able to come back to my roots. During a ministry trip I was invited to, I was traveling with a very powerful woman of God and we chatted for hours about various things. One thing she pointed out to me was the lyrics to the old gospel hymns. Some of which are “Are you washed in the blood?” – Elisha A. Hoffman, 1878. “There is power in the blood” – Lewis E. Jones, 1899. And lastly, “Nothing but the blood” – Robert Lowry, 1876. These three speak of the cleansing power of the blood, overcoming evil in victory, and atonement, hope and peace, and becoming whole. ALL of these speak of the possibilities through the power in the blood of Jesus from the sacrifice our Lord went through when He died at Calvary. His death gave us an identity. We are children of the Most High God with Jesus, Himself, at the right hand of the Father interceding for us (Romans 8:34).
In the scripture for this Christ’s Corner (Luke 10:19), Jesus tells us that He is giving us the authority to trample over the adversary. He has given us all the power to overcome anything that would come against us and to do mighty works not only as He did, but greater (John 14:12). The scriptures clearly show the delegated authority for filling God’s purpose, but we must remember that is not through us that we do these things. It is through Christ Jesus’ sacrifice with His blood. As I have grown and experienced the Holy Spirit, I have learned that pleading the blood of Jesus over situations, people, and circumstances actually works. I know from growing up with my background that most religions or religious veins might not agree with me, but I have witnessed, undeniably, the power of the Holy Spirit first hand. The word “Plead”, when looking at it from a point of view as if being in a court room, means to invoke as an accusation or defense. In this phrasing, it would surely be a defense. We plead the Blood over the situation or person to remind Satan and his demons of the authority we were given, the purification we were given through Christ Jesus, and our sanctification. Hebrews 10:19-20 says that we should be bold through the blood. Without that wonderful gift, we have nothing. It is ONLY through Jesus and His sacrifice that we are redeemed and able to walk in the spiritual authority.
