Skyhawks Claim Conference Title With Win Over Ave Maria

VALLEY, Ala. – What a turnaround. Last season the Point University football team recorded a 1-9 overall record with a 0-5 mark in Sun Conference play. The Skyhawks were crowned the 2015 Sun Conference champions after beating Ave Maria 49-14 to finish conference play with an undefeated 5-0 record.

It was a total team effort today as the Skyhawks offense racked up 507 total yards and the defense held Ave Maria scoreless through the first three quarters while allowing the Gyrenes just 313 total yards on offense.

The Gyrenes' defense was able to keep the high-powered Skyhawks offense off the board for the majority of first quarter, but with 1:42 left in the first period Charles Fortis found Brandon Robertson for a six-yard touchdown. Four minutes into the second quarter Fortis threw another six-yard touchdown, this time to Charles Ducksworth, to cap off a eight-play, 66-yard drive and give Point a 14-0 lead.

A few minutes later Christian Williams found the end zone on a one-yard rush to put the Skyhawks up by 21 heading into the halftime break.

Point (8-2, 5-0 TSC) continued to pour it on in third quarter as Fortis threw two more touchdown passes to Robertson and Ducksworth, Yohannes Mathyas ran back an interception 40 yards for another score, and Ladarrius Mathis ran it in for a oneyard touchdown just before the end of the period to give the Skyhawks a 49-0 advantage.

Ave Maria (4-6, 2-3 TSC) found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter but it was nearly enough to erase a 49point deficit.

Fortis completed 25 of 34 passes for 309 yards and tied a career-high with four passing touchdowns. Danyale Wicker led the Point ground game with 82 yards on seven carries. Wicker also caught two passes for 37 yards.

Robertson led the receiving corps with six catches and 80 yards to go along with his two touchdown catches, while Dominique Moore chipped in with four catches for 51 yards.

Antwane Merritt and Jared Moyston led the defense with five tackles each while Chip Moore added four tackles and a sack. Moyson also collected an interception and broke up another pass.

Point will finish up the regular season next Saturday, November 14 when they host Concordia College Alabama at 12 p.m. in Rams Stadium.
