American Red Cross Hosts Volunteer Recognition and Centennial Celebration

The American Red Cross is one of the oldest and most renowned organizations in the history of the United States. Founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been working for years to provide humanitarian services all across the globe. They are always present at the scene of a disaster to help care and provide for those in need. This past Tuesday night, June 20th, the local chapter of the Red Cross held a Centennial Celebration to honor their volunteers and reflect on 100 years of service.

After a welcome and invocation from John McKibben, the board chairman of the Red Cross, there was a wonderful dinner served to all of those in attendance. After the meal, County Commissioner Lewis Davis was on hand to read a proclamation from the County. The County acknowledged this event as the centennial celebration for the local chapter of the American Red Cross and thanked them for all of their service to the community.

Before the awards were handed out, there were two important items of business to take care of, the first of those being the centennial highlights from the past Executive Director, Barbra Hudson. Hudson explored all of the things that the group has been involved with over the past 100 years, including her involvement with helping victims of Hurricane Katrina. After the group reminisced on past volunteer efforts, Connie Hensler, the current executive director of the local chapter of the Red Cross, gave a year in review of the chapter. She touched on all of the various programs that the chapter has been working with over the course of the past calendar year, including their Heroes breakfast earlier this Spring honoring many different men and women from around the community.

The last section of the program was the presentation of the awards to various volunteers. Every volunteer was awarded with a bag and certificate before the special presentations were given out. Several people in attendance were recognized with awards for their outstanding service to the community and to the Red Cross itself. The Red Cross is a team of dedicated individuals who are always there to help in a time of crisis. Their legacy carries on as they continue to serve in the local community as well as all around the world.
