Pickleball: Troup County’s Fastest Growing Sport

In recent years, LaGrange and Troup County have become a haven of sorts for sports. We have some truly incredible high school football programs as well as the LaGrange College football team, several organized sporting events and teams, and we even have some high stakes sporting tournaments that come to the community on a regular occasion. One new sport is taking off here in the community, a game that requires nothing but fun and excitement for all of those involved. That game is pickleball and it is growing rapidly not just here in Troup County, but across the United States.

Yes, Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America, with a reported 2.5 million players. Since 1963, men and women have hit the court to take part in this incredible game that is becoming more and more popular by the minute, with over 80 new places to play popping up each month. The sport is a combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton, with competitors wielding paddles to smash a waffle ball back and forth over the net, trying to score points by landing the ball on the floor inside the lines. The game is easy to play but will take some time to actually perfect. It is governed by the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA.org) and over 4,390 courts across the Country.

Here locally, the movement is really taking off. Spalding County, Auburn, Opelika, Newnan, Peachtree City, and Griffin all have courts where people come out and play the game. In LaGrange, there is a group that meets at the Mike Daniel Recreation Center to play a couple of days a week. On Monday nights at 5:30 and Thursday mornings at 8:30 am, the group gets together for pickleball, sometime having up to three separate courts running at the same time.

New people are always welcomed at the pickleball court at Mike Daniel and are encouraged to come and bring friends with them. This is a game that is easy to learn and is fun for all ages to play. The team that currently plays is always willing to help train and teach people how to play. More than just a game, pickleball is a fun and exciting way to meet new people and you can show up without a partner. Just come out with a winning attitude, ready to take your place in the fastest growing game in Troup County and the USA.
