Two women have been charged with misdemeanor child protection charges after a toddler was found walking by himself in a local apartment complex.
Thursday morning about 7:42 a.m., officers with the LaGrange Police Department responded to the Sunridge Apartments on Hogansville Road in reference to reports of a toddler walking alone in the parking lot.
Police arrived and located the young child, who was unharmed. A member of the maintenance staff told police that he believed the toddler lived in a nearby apartment, so officers took the child there and he confirmed it was his home.
No one answered the door at the apartment, which was found unsecured. Officers called out into the apartment, but when no one answered, they entered the residence looking for an adult. No grownups were found inside the apartment, but police did locate two other small children.
According to police, several minutes later, Diamond Thompson arrived at the location and stated the children belonged to her sister, Shaniya Renee Doe. She stated that she left the location to take her sister to work.
Police were aware of previous child responsibility incidents involving the mother of the children, so detectives responded to the scene to further investigate.
Detectives also contacted Troup County Division of Family and Children Service’s (DFACS) and they sent a case worker to the location.
As a result of the investigation, Doe, age 21, was arrested and transported to the Troup County Jail where she was charged with warrants for Deprivation of a Minor.
Thompson, age 23, was also issued a citation for Parental Responsibility due to the fact that one of the children had been left in her care.
The children’s grandmother later came to the location and took custody of the kids.
Police say that a safety plan has been put in place by DFACS and this case is still under investigation.
