Callaway Is Still Ranked Third; Troup Maintains No. 4 Position

Football rankings should be taken with a grain of sea salt and a gulp of Gatorade.

The high school football polls are a conversation piece. They are a gauge. The polls are a state pulse for prep football in Georgia. The Troup Tigers and Callaway Cavaliers are alive and well.

Callaway High, coming off a 35-28 loss to rival Heard County, is still tied for third place in the state in the Class AA Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) Poll. The 6-1 Cavaliers and the 6-1 Hapeville Charter Hornets from Atlanta share the state’s No. 3 position.

Savannah Benedictine, 7-0 on the season, is the No. 1-ranked football team. The Screven County Gamecocks are second in the state. Callaway and Hapeville Charter are just one spot lower at No. 3. The Rabun County Wildcats, who are unscathed at 7-0, are ranked fifth in the state in the GPB Poll.

When it comes to the Class AAAA MaxPreps Poll, Troup High is ranked fourth in the state. The Tigers are an offensive machine this year with senior quarterback Montez Crowe (26 touchdown passes, 2,410 yards), junior split end Jamari Thrash (28 catches, 681 yards) and sophomore whiz Kobe Hudson (10 touchdown catches).

The Blessed Trinity Titans from Roswell, 7-1 on the season, are the No. 5 team in the state in the AAAA MaxPreps Poll. On the very top of the rankings is No. 1 Cartersville, No. 2 Ridgeland and No. 3 Atlanta Marist (7-0). Troup and Blessed Trinity are state championship contenders, too.

Don’t forget it.

The Tanner Glisson-coached Troup High Tigers, a 7-0 team, are also ranked sixth in the state in the GPB Class AAAA Poll. The top four teams in this poll include Cartersville, Thomson, Marist and the Burke County Bears from Waynesboro. The Bears have a 7-0 record.

The Callaway High boys, always ranked and always a football factor, are ranked as well at No. 14 in the state in the Class AA MaxPreps Poll. The Heard County Braves are the 10th-ranked team in the state. Heard County is 6-1 on the season.

Savannah Benedictine and the Hapeville Charter Hornets from Atlanta are currently the top two teams in the state in the MaxPreps AA Poll. The Brooks County Trojans (6-0) and the Thomasville Bulldogs (70) are ranked third and fourth, respectfully.
