A Troup County Detention Officer is currently working to collect water filtration devices to help hurricane victims in Peurto Rico get fresh, safe drinking water.
It’s been just over a month since Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, which devastate the island territory and took the lives of more than 60 people.
Since the initial devastation, much of Puerto Rico remains without electricity and fresh water. Officials say over three million people are still without power, but possibly more importantly, at least a million are believed to be without safe drinking water.
Troup County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer Edward Burton is working to do something about that. He’s currently working to collect portable water filters to help at least some of the countless people that are still without drinking water in Puerto Rico.
Burton is attempting to collect Sawyer Mini & Sawyer Squeeze,or similar water filters to send to out to the citizens of Puerto Rico.
These portable devices can be used to render safe readily available water from rivers, streams, and even puddles. Just one of these devices can be used to safely filter well over 100,000 gallons of water.
Burton has set a personal goal of collecting 1000 of the filters to send to Puerto Rico.
The filters are available at various online retailers like Academy Sports, Amazon, Bass Pro Shops, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Menards, Target, Walmart, and Full Metal Jacket Armory or online for about $20. Perhaps easiest for local residents, the filters are sold at Walmart and our new Durham Sports.
Burton says cannot accept cash donations at this time, but will accept gift cards for these retailers to purchase the filters.
Burton will also be giving out free boiled and fried peanuts at the Bo’s Snacks booth at the Chili Cook-off this Saturday at Sweetland Amphitheater to anyone who drops off one of the filters. He is offering two bags of any Bo’s Snacks products for one of the filters, while supplies last.
If anyone would like to donate a filter or a gift card to purchase one, they can be dropped off or mailed to: Troup County Sheriff’s Office c/o Officer Ed Burton 130 Sam Walker Drive LaGrange, GA 30241
