Man Accused of Fraudulently Selling Skating Rink Entry

LaGrange Police have arrested young man for theft after he allegedly fraudulently sold entry into the new Sweetland Ice Rink.

Saturday afternoon about 1:19 p.m., officers with the LaGrange Police Department responded to the Sweetland Amphitheatre in reference to a theft and possible fraud.

Officers arrived and spoke to the manager of the ice skating company that currently occupies Sweetland.

Police spoke to the manager, who stated he was recently informed by an employee that another employee was possibly fraudulently selling skating access and pocketing the cash. The manager advised he was told that then employee, Deonte Malik Carston, had told the other employee that they could make easy extra money by selling entry wristbands under the table.

The manager advised Carston had been working at the trailer where customers pick up and drop off ice skates. A customer later came up to him and asked why she didn’t get a wristband after paying Carston for the skates.

Management then began to watch Carston after this interaction and witnessed him receive a cash from a couple and giving them skates.

Police spoke to the witness who asked about the wristbands and she reported that Carston told her that she could pay him if she was paying with cash, so she paid him $20 for the skates. She then noticed other patrons were wearing wristbands, so she went to the concession stand and informed them that she paid Carston.

Carston was then placed under arrest for the incident.

When police later questioned Carston about the theft, he claimed there was a female that got mad at him because he couldn’t sell her tickets and she made up the story about him.

As a result, Carston, age 21, was arrested and transported to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office where he was booked into the jail charged with Theft by Deception.

This incident is still under investigation by the La- Grange Police Department Criminal Investigation Section.
