Junior right-hander Nico Mayoral (Mountain View, CA) pitched seven innings of shutout baseball and junior first baseman Dayton Cook (Spanish Fort, AL) and senior catcher Juan Reyes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each powered tworun home runs as Point University (6-4) completed a three-game sweep of Toccoa Falls College (6-5), by a 4-0 score, Saturday, Feb. 17 on Skyhawks Field in West Point, Ga. Point swept Friday’s doubleheader against TFC, 4-2 and 8-1. The Skyhawks have won six consecutive games since beginning the season with four consecutive losses.
Mayoral evened his record at 1-1 when he allowed five singles and walked two and struck out four Toccoa Falls batters in seven full innings of work. Point’s defense turned double plays in the third and seventh innings. Mayoral retired the first seven batters he faced in the game and then walked a batter who was immediately erased on a double play. He allowed two hits in just the sixth inning and after TFC loaded the bases with one out, Mayoral retired the side on a foul pop fly and a routine fly ball to center field.
Senior right-hander Will Ziebol (Phenix City, AL) allowed no hits and one walk and struck out one batter in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve Mayoral’s win.
Josh Slate, Toccoa Falls’ lead-off hitter was the only player with two hits for the visitors, and Cook went 3for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Cook put Point ahead, 2-0, in the bottom of the third inning with his first home run of the season. After Cook’s seventhinning double, Reyes drilled his fourth home run of the season to deep right-centerfield and gave Point a 40 lead with just two innings left to play.
Point totaled six hits, four for extra bases, and received just one walk from TFC starter Justin Skinner (0-1), who struck out six Skyhawks in eight innings. All four Point runs were earned.
Senior second baseman Taylor Harper (Columbus, GA) blasted a double and scored ahead of Cook’s third-inning home run, NEXT GAMES: Point hosts the University of Northwestern Ohio for a weekend three-game series, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2324. Point and Northwestern Ohio play a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m., and a single-nine inning game, Saturday at 1:00 p.m., at Skyhawks Field.
