A 4-year-old girl is recovering at an Atlanta hospital after being shot inside a residence in the Benjamin Harvey Hills Homes in La-Grange early Monday morning.
Police say the little girl was shot in the head inside of one of the apartments around 8:30 a.m.
The child was rushed to West Georgia Medical Center, but later taken via ground transport to an Atlanta area hospital. As of last report, the child is recovering.
Police are withholding many details at this time due to the ongoing investigation, but the shooting does not appear to be intentional.
Sgt. Robert Kirby of the LaGrange Police Department says investigators believe the incident was an accident. Police have an idea who fired the gun, but are not releasing that information until the investigation is complete. Kirby advised it is far too early to consider charges, if any, for the incident.
Police confirmed that the gunshot does not appear to be self inflicted.
The victim’s two male siblings, ages 2 and 7, were reportedly inside the residence when the shooting occurred.
LaGrange Housing Authority CEO Zsa Zsa Heard says the residents inside the apartment did not have any previously reported criminal or child services issues. The housing authority runs background checks on all tenants. It’s often not the tenants that cause housing authority issues, but their guests.
At this time police are not saying how the gun got into the home or how the children got access.
This incident is still under investigation by the La-Grange Police Department.
