The Callaway Cavaliers had a quick start in the Class AAquarterfinals Monday, as they made their bid for the championship playoff.
With star pitcher Chandler Lott on the mound, the Cavaliers catapulted to a staggering 10-0 lead over their foes from Benedictine before falling 7-0 in the second game of the double header. The Cavaliers, who needed two wins to advance to the next round, find themselves in familiar territory. The embattled Callaway squad lost to #1 Thomasville last week before grinding out a 2-1 victory to force a Thursday-evening tie breaker.
Now, back in the same position, the Cavaliers are looking for the same result. Callaway pulled out a victory against Thomasville to earn their spot in the quarterfinal playoffs.
The Cavaliers exploded in the third inning of the first game with eight runs, putting the Cavaliers up 80. They capped off scoring with two more in the fourth, to end the game early.
Lott allowed only two hits and no runs while striking out three, going 74-42 on the mound.
Drake Wade (2), Wesley Marchman (1), Chandler Lott (1), Braelin Mitchell (2), Kyle Campbell (1), Trent Shephard (2), and Jabari Smith (1) all scored for the Cavaliers.
The celebration was shortlived for the Cavaliers. In an impressive rebound, Benedictine shut out Callaway 7-0 in the second match to force a tiebreaker.
Benedictine scored five runs early in the second inning en route to their victory before capping off scoring in the final two innings.
If the Cavaliers win Tuesday’s game, they will compete for the state championship series. The Cavaliers currently boast an impressive 27-11 record.
At the time of this article, the tiebreaker game has not yet been played. It is scheduled for Tuesday, 12pm, if weather permits.
Results will be in the Friday, May 18th edition of the Troup County News.
