Grangers Prepare for Scrimmage

The LaGrange Grangers continued practice Monday, August 6 in preparation for their upcoming preseason scrimmage this Friday.

The game will be held at Callaway Stadium at 7 PM on August 10. The Grangers will be facing off against Kendrick High School and have a shot at winning their first game in more than a season.

The Grangers battled through the heat Monday, with temperatures nearing 100 F. The LaGrange coaching staff worked with players as they started their last week of practice before their preseason game.

LaGrange has been hard at work under new head coach Chuck Gibbs. Gibbs replaced Dialleo Burks as the LaGrange head ball coach after the Grangers suffered a winless season last fall.

In his short time at La-Grange, Gibbs has already laid the foundation for a more successful program. After only about two weeks of practice in May, for instance, the Grangers broke their losing streak with a tie against Manchester in their spring scrimmage.

Up 14-0 at half, the Grangers put together one of their best games in more than a season.

For hopeful Granger fans, a change is in the air. Gibbs, whose father enjoyed a successful career in the NFL, led a solid program in Arizona before taking the La-Grange job.

Now he’s tasked with rebuilding one of the moststoried football programs in the state while taking on an increasingly-strong incounty rival in Troup. The Tigers have long since “thawed the ice” on La-Grange’s long rivalry win streak, and a rising Granger program will make for an exciting matchup between the two programs every year.

Friday’s matchup against Kendrick will be the latest measuring stick for the Granger program.

The Granger football season will officially kick off against a tough Heard County team on Friday, August 17. The game will be played at Callaway Stadium at 7:30 PM. A strong showing against Heard County would be a good indicator of progress for the Grangers.

Other Troup County schools hold preseason games this week as well. The Tigers of Troup High will play their scrimmage Thursday, August 9 at 7:30 PM, taking on Northside Columbus at Callaway Stadium. The Cavaliers will travel to play Starrs Mill Friday, August 10 for their preseason game.
