Mrs. Janice J. Sams

Mrs. Janice Julene Sams, age 69, of LaGrange, passed away, Thursday, March 10, 2016 at West Georgia Medical Center. Born July 8, 1946 in Troup County, Mrs. Sams was the daughter of the late Helen Dorothy Nasworthy. She was a lifelong resident of Troup County, retired from Milliken Elm City Plant, and loved crafting with her grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Darlene Sams; two sons and a daughter in-law, Tim and Kim Sams and their son Jacob and Greg Sams and his son Gabriel, all of LaGrange; grandchildren, Kevin and Joann Sams and their children, Elijah and Layla, Jennifer and Jon Biles and their children, Katelyn and Ella, and Jessica Leona Sams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald O’Neal Sams. The family of Mrs. Sams is honoring her wish that no funeral service be held.

Elizabeth Jeanette Shannon

Mrs. Elizabeth Jeanette Shannon, age 83, of LaGrange, passed away on March 9, 2016 at the Hospice LaGrange. Mrs. Shannon was preceded in death by her parents, Ulysses Crenshaw and Lib Murphy Crenshaw and by her husband, Joseph Kershaw Shannon, lll. Survivors include her children, Jay Shannon of LaGrange, Amy Cahill and her husband Lt Col (ret) Robert Cahill of Havelock, North Carolina, Missy Garrett and her husband Steve of LaGrange and Matt Shannon and his wife Becky of LaGrange; grandchildren, Shelley Garrett Morrison and her husband SGT 1st Class Philip Morrison, Lindsey Garrett, Shannon Cahill and Matthew Cahill; great grandchildren, Austin, Makayla and Abby. Memorial services were held on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Rev. Allen Pruitt officiated. Family received friends following the service at the church. Robert E. Branch

Robert E. Branch, age 73, of LaGrange, passed away on March 9, 2016. Robert worked many years for Kissel Entertainment and saw the country. He loved to fish in his spare time. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Mr. Branch was preceded in death by his wife Betty Branch; parents, Opal and William Carl Branch; brother, William “W.C.” Branch; sister, Elizabeth Snellgrove. Robert is survived by his four daughters, Tina (Robbie) Hall, Ericka (Robert) Folds, Penny (Jamie) Porritt, Trina Pike; two sons, Mike (Tammy) Pike and Scottie Pike; 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; brother, Dan (Marie) Branch; sister-in-law, Willie Branch. The family received friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home on Friday, March 11, 2016. The funeral was held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the funeral home at 3:00pm. Balisa Lay Gates

A Time To Be Born: Balisha Lay Gates was born December 12, 1964, the third child born to Shirley Maddox and the late, Ernest J. Maddox, Sr. A Time To Gain: She joined Confidence Missionary Baptist Church. She loved ministering to others and spreading the Word about Jesus Christ our Savior. A Time To Be Planted: Mrs. Gates received her education from LaGrange High School. She owned and operated her own business, Gates Cleaning Service. A Time To Love: Balisha and Aaron Gates were united in Holy Matrimony on February 14, 1996. A Time To Laugh: She was a joyful woman with a spirit for fun and laughter. A Time Of Peace: On Thursday afternoon, March 3, 2015 our dear beloved went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to her father, Ernest, Sr., she was preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Maddox, Jr.; grandparents, George and Mary Q. Rolland; several aunts and uncles. A Time To Mourn: Leaving to cherish her memories, two daughters, Tamesha Lay, LaGrange, GA; and Alexius Gates, Albany, GA; one granddaughter, Nyla J. Bass, LaGrange, GA; her mother, Mrs. Shirley Maddox; three brothers, Gaylord M. Laye, Irvin (Lisa) Maddox, and Dionne Maddox; four sisters, Montest (Carlton) Cameron, Cynthia Maddox, Tonya Maddox, and Kathy Maddox; special friend, Aaron Gates; sisters-in-law, Octavia Gates and Katrina Gates; brothers-inlaw, Dwight Gates, all of La-Grange, GA; Dexter Gates, Atlanta, GA; special nephew and nieces, Carlton (Veneka) Cameron and Monica Hill and LaPorsha Maddox; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM at New Community Church. Rev. Michael Jackson officiated. Burial followed at Southview Cemetery.

Charlotte Yvonne Pruitt

Charlotee Yvonee Pruitt was born April 6, 1963 in LaGrange, Georgia to Mr. John Williams and Ms. Annette Baugh. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1981. Charlotte joined United In Christ Church of Deliverance in 2002. She leaves behind a legacy of memories, some of her “good ole” cooking; and others with her ability to be a “true fighter”. She wouldn’t allow anything to stop her or get her down. She was a true Soldier for the Lord. Through her life journey, she always had her mother, father, daughter, and siblings supporting her. On March 5, 2016; Charlotte passed away due to major health issues. She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Jasmine Cameron; mother, Ms. Annette Baugh; father, John Williams; siblings including two brothers, Tony Pruitt and Lonnie Baugh; four sisters, Fredia, Losongia, Bedez, and Veronica; her god-baby, Raniya Perdue; and a host of family and friends. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 1:00 PM at United In Christ Church of Deliverance. Pastor James L. Chelcy officiated. Burial followed at Meaodway Gardens Cemetery.

Valetha ‘Lisa’ Houston

Ms. Valetha Lee Houston was born December 4, 1958 in West Point, Georgia to Mr. Luther Houston, Sr. and the late, Mrs. Oudia J. Cumberlander Houston. “Letha or Lisa” as she was affectionately known accepted Christ at an early age at Saint John Baptist Church. She later joined Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served in the choir and remained a faithful member until her passing. She was the mother of Mondrell O. Houston; and the god-mother of Zachary Holloway. Later, she became the foster parent of two beautiful girls, Janaya Alford and Akela Jones. Lisa attended Troup County Schools and continued her education by attending cosmetology school and later classes to become a certified nurse assistant. She has many talents and was known for her interior decorating. She was active and always on the go. As a member of the Ebony Shining Star Social Club she traveled and participated in community services that helped many. She was known for being the “life of the party” and always ready to have a good time. On March 5, 2016, Valetha departed this life at Crawford Long Hospital, Atlanta Georgia and entered into Eternal Rest. In addition to her mother, Oudia; she was preceded in death by her son, Mondrell Houston; her sisters, Valerie Houston and Cherrylea Jackson; nephew, Mario Houston; grandparents, Cooper (FannieLou) Houston and Willie Ben(Lillian) Cumberlander. Valetha leaves to cherish her memories, a loving father, Luther Houston, Sr.; brothers, Luther O.(Emma) Houston, Jr., West Point, GA; Jonathan Houston, LaGrange, GA; sisters, Gloria (James) McQueen, West Point, GA and Tina Cameron, LaGrange, GA; aunts, Louise Walker, Hamilton, GA.; Gladys Houston, Mattie Houston and Teretha Cumberlander, all of West Point, GA; Phenia (Henry) Hanford and Olivia Cumberlander, both of Atlanta, GA; and Jessie Mae Cumberlander, Indianapolis, IN; a special friend, Marcus Dunlap, LaGrange GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 12:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Dr. W.T. Edmondson officiated. Burial followed at St. John Community Baptist Church Cemetery.
