Ina Clark Scheer

Mrs. Ina Clark Scheer, age 88, of Newnan, passed away Monday, October 24, 2016, at Christian City Sparks Inn Assisted Living in Union City. Mrs. Scheer was born October 3, 1928, in Jasper, daughter of the late Freeman and Ella Champion Padgett. She lived in Coweta and Heard counties most of her life and retired from Newnan Hospital after more than 20 years of service as a nurse. She enjoyed flower gardening and quilting, and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Newnan, where she was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Scheer is survived by her children, Eddie Clark and his wife Linda of Douglasville, Kristy Loy of Whitesburg, Jackie Jackson of Wrightsville, Jody Yohn and her husband Tom of Hoschton, Milley Clark of Freeport, FL, and Dena Swartz of Gulf Shores, AL; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Clark and Charlie Scheer; by her daughters, Trina Clark and Sandra Turnipseed; and all fourteen of her siblings. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend John Riley and the Reverend Doug Bearden will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville. Barbara Ann Burgess Short

Barbara Ann Burgess Short, age 72, of Pine Mountain, Georgia passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016. Memorial services were held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Hopewell Methodist Church. A private burial followed the service. Barbara was born October 28, 1943 to the late Minnie Huey Burgess and J.L. Burgess, Sr. Mrs. Short was a member of Hopewell Methodist Church, a Master Gardner, a loving homemaker and wife, and a beloved mother and grandmother. During her lifetime she enjoyed traveling throughout the world, historic preservation efforts in the community and baking. After raising their family in Forest Park and Fayetteville, Barbara and J.B. returned to the Whitesville Community in 2002 and restored the family home place. They enjoyed renewing old friendships and meeting new neighbors who became dear friends. Her keen wit and broad base of knowledge shall be missed by all who knew her, and her kind soul and nurturing heart will be missed by all who loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Short, son, Christopher Short, and grandson, Jesse Burgess Short. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Michele Short; daughter and son-in-law, Libba and Martin Ford; granddaughters, Ashley Short, Allison Sims, Anna Sims, and Grace Short; and several nieces and nephews. Kathryn Joyce Baker Messer

Mrs. Kathryn Joyce Baker Messer, age 88, of LaGrange, passed away on October 25, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Messer was born on May 31, 1928 in Columbus, Georgia to the late James “Jim” Hale and Jimmie Mae Watson Hale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles H. Baker and her second husband, John Messer; siblings, Mary Railey, Blanche Lynch Gaston, Lillian Bloodworth, Miriam Hawthorne McGlamery, Cora Brazell, Wallace Hale, Earnest Hale, Bonnie Hale and James C. Hale. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Dianne Thorgesen and her husband Michael; sister, Nancy Guess; grandchildren, Jacqueline Reeves and Jeff Waldrop and his wife Lori; great grandchildren, Amanda Varden, Megan Reeves, Baylee Reeves and James Rawlin Waldrop; special niece and her husband, LaRue and Jim Butler; numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Higgins LaGrange Chapel with Rev. Vivian Geraldine Fuller Bleier

Mrs. Vivian Geraldine Fuller Bleier, age 76, of Valley, AL passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Bleier is survived by her seven children, Penny (Joe) Walden, Keith (Debra) Fuller, Lisa (Clell) Carnes, Luann (Jeff) Gleaton, Greg (Monique) Fuller, Timothy (Kim) Fuller, and Michael (Alisha) Fuller; 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; her dog, Gracie. She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Fuller and William Bleier, Sr.; her son, James Stephen “Steve” Fuller; siblings, Juanita, Donald, Imogene, Henry Lee “Benny”, Myrline, and Patsy. Mrs. Bleier was born on June 16, 1940 in Harris County, Georgia. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Temple. She enjoyed telling stories “out of her memory book” on Facebook, being on the go, and listening to Conway Twitty. She cooked the best chicken and dressing around. She loved life and her grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Rev. James O’Steen officiated. Interment followed in Reeds Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in West Point, GA.

Cody Joshua Staples

Mr. Cody Joshua Staples, age 25, a resident of LaGrange, GA and a former resident of Lanett, AL passed away Friday, October 21, 2016 at the West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 4:00 PM EST from Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Rev. Milford McClain officiated. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett. Cody was born in Opelika, AL. He attended West End Baptist Church. His favorite loves were his two daughters. He loved to watch drag racing, and working on all kind of cars. He loved pets especially pit bulls, and was an avid fan of Alabama Crimson Tide Football. He is survived by his parents, Ken & Gail Scott Staples; two daughters, Cailynn Marie & Laila Elizabeth; sister, Brandy Staples; brother, K.C. Staples; grandmother, Grace Scott; grandfather, Lehman Scott; grandfather, Joe Staples; and aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Carter Scott and his grandmother, Sarah Staples. Forest Dowell, Sr.

Mr. Forest Dowell, Sr. was born to the late, Mr. and Mrs. George and Ollie Pearl Dowell on May 16, 1943 in Troup County, Georgia. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ at his neighborhood church, Sardis Baptist Church. He was a 1964 graduate of East Depot High School. Shortly after completion, Forest entered the workforce where he was employed with Dunson Mill of LaGrange, Georgia. After providing services for 25 plus years for Dunson, he moved forward to be employed with Interface Flor for 14 years. Forest was also an Active Member of the LaGrange Men’s Pep Club. He departed this life on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 surrounded by family and close friends at Hospice LaGrange. In addition to his parents, Forest was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Ira Dowell, Sr. and Paul Williams. During his lifespan, he joined in Matrimony with the late, Julia Ann McCamey Dowell. From this union, three children were born, Forest (Patty) Dowell, Gia M. (Gene) Harrell, and Maiya A. (Raphael) Dowell; nine grandchildren, RaShad J. Pickett, Dennard J. Pickett, Shabreka N. Pickett, Danielle Dowell, Sterling A. Dowell, Maya A. Worle, Seth M. Dowell, Devin L. Dowell, and Tyson Z. Shells; one great granddaughter, RaShae J. Pickett. In addition to his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, Forest leaves to cherish his memories, one brother, John (Marie) Cameron; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Robinson, Rev. Johnnie (Willie) Freeman, Gail J. McCamey, Mina W. McCamey and Florence K. Dowell; brothers-in-law, Charlie D. (Yvette) McCamey, Rev. Josh T. (Pam) McCamey, Kenneth A. McCamey, and LeGree D. McCamey; and a host of nieces, nephews, special friends, Anthony Adams and Elizabeth Hughley and Family. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Fannin Street. Rev. Johnnie Freeman officiated. Burial followed at Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.

Angie Denise Smith

Angie Denise Smith was born January 29, 1961 in Troup County, Georgia to Oweeda Burton and to the late, George A. Royal, Sr. “Dut” as she was affectionately known, accepted Christ at an early age as her Lord and Savior. She joined the Eastside Baptist Church under the aspired leadership of Pastor O. C. Stiggers. Angie attended the LaGrange Public Schools. She was a graduate of LaGrange High School, Class of 1980. She was a former employee of Duracell Productions, LaGrange, GA for 24 years; she also worked at the Wal-Mart store for four years. She was a strong family-oriented person. She was blessed with three sons and two special nephews whom she reared to be fine young men. Angie married Jerry Montgomery on February 14, 2012. Our heavenly father called Dut home on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at her residence in Ellenwood, Georgia. In addition to her father George; she was preceded in death by one sister, Glory Ann Smith; two brothers, Walter L. Smith and James Royal; and nephew, Tangy Harris. She leaves us all with fun memories to share and reflect upon. Her precious memories will be cherished by her three loving sons: Derrick (Rhonda) Smith, Tampa, FL; DeShun Smith, LaGrange, GA; Eric Smith, Ellenwood, GA; one granddaughter, Zy’Anna Jackson, LaGrange, GA; mother, Oweeda Burton, Ellenwood, GA; her husband, Jerry Montgomery, Lithia Springs, GA; four brothers, Louis Burton, Ellenwood, GA; Kevin Royal, Stanley Royal, George Royal, Jr., all of Atlanta, GA; Lamar Smith, Pine Mountain, GA; three sisters, Ruby Stargell, LaGrange, GA; Michelle Toliver (Ronald) Curry, Lisa Royal (Terry) Hall, all of Atlanta, GA; two nephews that she reared and loved very much, Calvin Tyrone Fannin, Seattle, WA; and Fletcher Burton, San Antonio, TX; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Leete Hill U.M. Church. Pastor James Woods and Rev. Larry West officiated. Burial followed at Southview Cemetery.
