Betty Thomas Rahv
Betty Thomas Rahv, (March 30, 1931-April 15, 2017) a native of Charleston, WV and eldest child of the late Marian Pope Thomas and Andrew Stephen Thomas, Jr. passed away in LaGrange, of natural causes. She is survived by her son, William L. McIlvain of Charleston WV; siblings, Emma Lewis Thomas of Livingston, MT, Marian Thomas Wood of Riverdale, NY, and Andrew Stephen Thomas III of Charleston, WV; as well as four nieces, three nephews, seven grand nieces and five grand nephews. She was cared for by her niece’s family, Erica Nashan and James K. Arnold of LaGrange, and their children, Roselyn, Eolyne and Andrew Arnold. Her devoted caretakers, Wanda Feltman, Toni Anne Ball, and Roselyn Arnold were at her side. Accolades include a BA from Sweet Briar College, a MA from Middlebury College, and PhD in French Literature from Indiana University. She also attended Ohio Wesleyan University, Yale University, and the University Paris-Sorbonne as a Fulbright Scholar. She served twice as Chairman of the Romance Languages Department at Boston College and authored many articles on French Philosophy and Literature, as well as a book, “From Sartre to the New Novel”. Her passions led her to travel the world to research history, culture and art. A devoted teacher, she nurtured the talents of her students and was revered by her colleagues. As a native West Virginian she was crowned Mountain State Forest Festival Queen Silvia XV in 1951. She loved the outdoors, summer visits with family, and took comfort in her many pets at home. She remained loyal to her family, sharing her love of the world as well as her deep ties to the place of her childhood in the Appalachian Mountains. Ted E. Newton
Mr. Ted Edwin Newton, age 58, of Grantville, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017. Mr. Newton was born November 8, 1958, son of the late Paul and Betty Steffin Newton. A resident of Grantville for seven years, he had lived in Coweta County for a number of years and had been employed as a welder. He was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Newnan. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Newton of Grantville; daughter and son in-law, Jessica and Josh Beusse of Athens; son, Levi Newton of Grantville; sisters, Regina Hickman of Centre, AL, Melinda Hornsby of Lawrenceville; brother, Gary Newton of Atlanta; and grandchildren, Paxton Beusse, Aaron Beusse, and Jacob Beusse. The funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Reverend Joe Strickland will officiate. Robert G. Maddox
Mr. Robert Gaines Maddox, age 81, of Hogansville, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Grantville. Mr. Maddox was born February 15, 1936, in Carroll County, son of the late Norman and Mabel Wilson Maddox. A veteran of service in the U. S. Marine Corps, he had lived in Troup County since 1974, was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church in LaGrange, and retired as a foreman from Perry Communications. He enjoyed woodworking and attending the Active Life Center in LaGrange. Survivors include his children, James Edwin Maddox of Hogansville, Bonnie Jean Jones and her husband Mike of Grantville, Lora Maddox Bailey of Centralhatchee, Joseph Clayton Maddox and his wife Dottie of Columbus, OH, Corey Maddox and his wife Chelse of Ft. Stewart; sisters, Jean Ludwick of Powder Springs, Patsy Barron of Clarksdale; brother, Danny Maddox of Austell; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Warren Maddox, and his brother, Lavaine Maddox. The funeral service was conducted at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, April 20, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Reverend Anthony Hovey officiated. Myrtle Irene Wilger Rowe
Mrs. Myrtle Irene Wilger Rowe, age 96, of LaGrange, passed away on March 13, 2017 at the Hospice LaGrange. Mrs. Rowe was born on December 14, 1920. Mrs. Rowe is survived by her son, Jim Rowe; daughter, Carol Turlich and her husband Marion; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wilger, she was preceded in death by children, Mary Darby, John Nystrom and Pat Herring. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Loyd Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rix Threadgill officiating. Marilyn M. Hall
Mrs. Marilyn M. Hall, age 60, of LaGrange, passed away on April 13, 2017 at the WellStar West Georgia Hospice. Mrs. Hall was born on September 21, 1956 in Columbus, Georgia to Thomas Will Hall and Haddie Mae Henson Hall. Mrs. Hall was a homemaker caring for the needs of her family. Family memorial services will be held.

Shirley Novis Finley
Shirley Novis Finley was born in Randolph County, Alabama on August 8, 1937. Novis went to be with The Lord on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. She was raised in Riverview and settled in Valley, Alabama where she worked at West Point Pepperell as a Hemmer until retirement. Novis and her husband, Richard Finley, were members of Shawmut First Baptist Church. Novis is celebrating in heaven now with her daughter, Gayle Finley, her son, Dennis Finley, daughter-in-law Rhonda Finley, and her parents, Willis and Lila Smith. Novis is missed by her husband, Richard Finley, daughter Shelby (Ben) Polidoro, grandson Adam Finley, granddaughters, Cassey Finley and Amanda (Christian) Demyan, and great-grandsons Carter Demyan and Walker Demyan. Novis deeply loved her Savior and her family. She enjoyed traveling and watching hummingbirds. She also loved cooking for her family and her pecan pies were loved by all. Visitation was held from 6:00pm – 8:00pm (EST) Friday, April 14, 2017 at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley, Alabama. Joyce C. Johnson
Joyce C. Johnson, age 70, of LaGrange, GA passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Wellstar West Georgia Hospice. Ms. Johnson was born November 14, 1946 in Alexander City, AL to the late Marvin Eugene “Scoopy” Chappell and Para Lee Nix Chappell. She was a retired LPN and was recently employed with Poplar Creek as a Home Care Nurse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Duffie. Survivors include her son, Allen (Samantha) Johnson; grandchildren, Emilee and Lyndsee Kate Johnson; sisters, Nancy (Jesse) Irvin and Amelia Shelhorse; brothers, Donald (Suzanne) Newberry and Gene (Lorraine) Chappell; other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2017at Baptist Tabernacle with Reverend Jimmy McMillian officiating. Burial will follow in Meadoway Gardens.
