Melvin Eugene Johnson

December 17, 1941 – May 19, 2017

Melvin Eugene Johnson, 75, of Manchester, died Friday, May 19, 2017 at his home. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm, Monday, May 22, 2017 at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Manchester with Rev. Steve Garner officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 pm prior to the service. Mr. Johnson will be cremated following the funeral service.

Mr. Johnson was born December 17, 1941 in Sylacauga, AL, the son of William and Dorothy Mae Jones Johnson. He had worked as a welder for many years before going to work for Georgia Pacific where he retired after more than 20 years. Mr. Johnson was a member of Mt. Hope Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary King, four brothers, Billy, Jeff, Roger Dale and Carl Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Phillips Johnson of Manchester; his son, Michael (Patti) Johnson of Manchester; two daughters, Lisa Johnson and Teresa (Steve) Power all of Manchester; five sisters, Judy Delaney, Alice Pulley, Ginger Buntin, Lynetta Osborn, Nelda Clifft; one step-sister, Sarah Johnson; five brothers, Ray (Judy) Johnson, Johnny (Maria) Johnson, Jerry (Michelle) Johnson, Stevie (Bonnie) Johnson and Tommy Johnson; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Linda Ann Burrow Coleman

February 28, 1949 ~ May 20, 2017 (age 68)

Mrs. Linda Ann Burrow Coleman, age 68, of Cusseta, AL passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the EAMC Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley, AL.

Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband of 47 years, Lewis Thomas Coleman, Sr.; her sons, Jason D. (Crystal) Coleman and Lewis T. (Carla) Coleman, Jr.; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Teresa Turner and Betty (Stanley) McConnell; brother, Hoyt (Lisa) Burrow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Coleman was born on February 28, 1949 in Opelika, AL. For 32 years she worked long, 12 hour shifts in the local mills. She was very active in her son’s team sports when they were younger. She enjoyed being outside with her grandchildren and fishing. She loved her family.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 2:00 PM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Doug Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

Mr. Kenneth “Mike” Yancey

August 24, 1946 ~ May 20, 2017 (age 70)

Mr. Kenneth “Mike” Yancey, age 70, of Cusseta, Alabama passed away on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Yancey was born in LaFayette, Alabama on August 24th, 1946 to the late James A. Yancey and Margaret High Yancey.  He was also preceded in death by his son, D.J. Yancey; brother, John Yancey.

Mike was a graduate of Valley High School and Auburn University.

He later joined the United States Army and attained the rank of Captain of the Military Police, while serving in Vietnam.

Upon returning from Vietnam, he taught at LaGrange College and Auburn University, eventually retiring from a career in Industrial Engineering.

His passions in life were his friends, family, gardening, and cooking.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina Yancey Fisher, Guntersville; granddaughter, Alli Fisher, Guntersville; sister, Claudie Yancey Gatlin, Lake Harding Community; aunt, Sara Yancey, LaFayette; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017 at 2:30P.M. EDT at the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Alabama.  His family will be receiving friends Monday evening from 6:00P.M. EDT until 8:00P.M. EDT at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

Irma Lucy Hyams, 80, of LaGrange, GA passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017 at West Georgia Hospice.Mrs. Hyams was born July 11, 1936 in Havana, Cuba to the late Julio Andres Riveiro y Vidal and Lucy Comelles Riveiro. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Samuel Hyams; daughter, Lucy Oakes; sons, Nathan Oakes and Ralph Hyams; and son-in-law, Mike Crabb. Survivors include her daughters, Virginia (James) Ormsby, Linda Crabb, Vicki Johnson; son, Daniel DeForest (Angela) Oakes; daughter-in-law, Jackie Oakes; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia and Avelina; other relatives and friends. The Gathering of Family and Friends will be Friday, May 26, 2017 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. The Funeral Service will be 11:00am Saturday, May 27, 2017 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Father Patrick Scully officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery. Mr. Mark Henry Purcell, 59, of LaGrange, GA passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at his home. Mr. Purcell was born April 7, 1958 in LaGrange, GA to the late Dupree Purcell and Edna Inez Hanners Purcell. He was a member of Celebrate Recovery and attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church on Young’s Mill Rd. Mark loved to sing, play his guitar and ukulele. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and playing tennis. He was once the co-owner of Nita’s Flowers and previously worked at Bacon Street Junkyard. Mark was loved by all and judged no one. Survivors include his son, Jonathan Purcell of Auburn, AL; aunt, Lillian “Aunt Pep” Johnson of Alma, GA; several cousins, other relatives and friends including close friends, John Freeman, James Rimmer, and Joan Woodson. The Funeral service will be 3:00pm Wednesday, May 24, 2017 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Pastor Paul Glass officiating.
