Coach Jan Fendley knows the how and the why of it.

Fendley’s Lady Grangers found a way to beat Troup High School, 58-49 on Friday night in a rivalry of the basketball kind. There was some scratching and clawing going on in the game at LaGrange High.

“We rebounded well. We hit our free throws when we needed to. We had a good attitude and a good effort. And you always want to beat your cross-town rival,” said Fendley.

Her Lady Grangers did find a way to run their record to 3-1. It took four quarters of hard work for LaGrange High School. The Troup Lady Tigers did not go quietly. Troup High led 9-6 in the first quarter and 16-15 in the second period.

Junior guard Kwa Spence knocked down a three-point shot to give the Lady Tigers their 16-15 lead halfway through the second quarter. But LaGrange High came back to take a 22-18 lead behind freshman forward Carmen McGhee.

The Lady Grangers also went on a 13-5 spurt to move ahead 28-21. LaGrange High even opened up a lead of 33-25 early in the third quarter after a layin from sophomore guard Chnairiea Strozier.

“I was nervous. The gym was going crazy. But we played as a team, and we played together,” said the 5foot-4 Strozier.

LaGrange High senior guard Erica Daniel was a factor as well with a key fastbreak layup in the final seconds of the third period. Daniel gave the Lady Grangers a 42-35 lead.

But somehow the Troup High girls just couldn’t take a hint. The Lady Tigers kept hanging around, courtesy of sophomore guard Sha-Qoya Gilbert. She bagged a three-point basket in the fourth quarter to cut the Lady Grangers lead to 53-47.

Gilbert also forced a La-Grange High turnover with 1:28 left. The Lady Tigers weren’t done.

“This was a hostile environment, and it was bringing out the best in our players. We didn’t quit. ShaQoya played some defense,” said Carla Thornton, the head coach of the 2-1 Lady Tigers.

But LaGrange High withstood the comeback bid from Troup High School. The Lady Grangers scored five of the last seven points in the game.

LaGrange High also finished with some balanced scoring with 18 points from Shania Woodard, 16 points from Strozier and 14 points from sophomore guard Aryan Dozier. Erica Daniel added six points.

The Troup High girls were led by Gilbert with 22 points. Sophomore Kiya Fulton netted nine points, and Aundracia Riggins, Gabby Lockhart and Kwa Spence banked in four points each for the Lady Tigers.
