Michael F. Hale
Michael F. Hale, age 68, of Manchester, died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Warm Springs Medical Center, Warm Springs. Memorial services were held at 2:00 pm on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the chapel of Cox Funeral Home, Manchester. Visitation was held immediately following the service. Mr. Hale was born August 5, 1948 in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of Sydney and Mary Scully Hale. He moved to the Manchester area as a child and married his wife, Debra, in 1969. He began his career with the local newspaper as a pressman. During his career at the paper, he became an ad salesman and then editor for the Star Mercury Newspaper. Mr. Hale worked for the newspaper for 33 years and then joined Langdale Automotive, later known as Sledge Automotive, as a car salesman. He returned to work at the Star Mercury and continued working until his death. Golf was his life-long passion, and he played weekly when he was able. He loved to make people laugh and always had a joke to tell. Watching Family Feud was also something he really enjoyed. Survivors include his wife, Debra of Manchester, Georgia; two daughters, Jennifer Williams (Fred Stach) of Manchester, Georgia, and Laura Toms (Eddie Taylor) of Columbus, Georgia; one son, Josh Hale, and his wife, Kathy of Waverly Hall, Georgia; two sisters, Patty Railey, and her husband, Clyde of Manchester, Georgia, and Lisa Rios, and her husband, Joe of Peachtree City, Georgia; two brothers, Joe Hale of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Syd Hale of Plano, Texas and 8 grandchildren. Maggie Louise Mallory
Maggie Louise Mallory, age 79, of Woodland, GA died Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Warm Springs Nursing Home, Warm Springs, GA. Funeral services for Mrs. Mallory were held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Woodland Baptist Church, Woodland, GA with burial in the Woodland Cemetery. The family received friends Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Mrs. Mallory was born August 3, 1937 in Alvaton, GA the daughter of Robert Lee and Elizabeth Quigley Garner. She was a retired inspector with Milliken Mill and former waitress for Charlie Dunn; Tante’s Café and Buice restaurants. Mrs. Mallory was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; five siblings; daughter Marie Pike; step-son Rodney Mallory and granddaughter Teresa Brawner. She is survived by her husband Roy Mallory of Woodland, daughter Mae (Charles) Mallory of Woodland; son Walter Brawner, Jr. of New Orleans, LA; sister Rachel Carswell of Dahlonega, GA eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; two brother-in-laws John Mallory and his wife, Sandra, and Glen Mallory of Woodland, GA; several nieces and nephews. Norma Lou Ashby Tomblin
Norma Lou Ashby Tomblin, age 76, of Fortson, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 25, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Tomblin had courageously battled Multiple Myeloma for many years. The daughter of the late Norman B and Violet Marie Wilcox Ashby was born August 13, 1940 in Winchester, Virginia. She lived most of her life in Paris, Virginia, Lawrenceville, Georgia, and called Fortson, Georgia her home for the past 20 years. Norma married William Leroy Tomblin on July 30, 1960 at Cherry Point Marine Corp Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina. Norma Lou was a graduate of Clarke County High School in Berryville, Virginia and attended Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. A devoted and loving wife, she is survived by her husband, Leroy Tomblin of Fortson, and two children, Tracy Tomblin Propst (Jeff) of Columbus, Georgia and Stephen Ashby Tomblin (Sabine) of Yorba Linda, California; four grandchildren, Tabetha Marie Propst, William Jeffery Propst (Kristina) of Columbus, Georgia, and Hannah Elizabeth Tomblin and Andre Steven Tomblin of Yorba Linda, California; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel Nicholas Propst and Isabella Sophia Propst of Columbus, Georgia, and many beloved cousins and lifelong friends. Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Bigham Chapel United Methodist Church in Fortson, Georgia. Donald Gary Maddux
Donald Gary Maddux, age 64, of Pine Mountain, GA, formerly of the Valley area, passed away on December 29, 2016, after complications from treatment of leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Sharon Swader Maddux, daughters Crispen Maddux Lott (Jason), Heather Maddux Hajek(Greg), and grandchildren Chandler and Jada Lott, Holden and Hudson Hajek. Siblings Danny (Libby) Maddux, Rodney (Michelle) Maddux, Barry (Paula) Maddux, Derender (Scott) Trippel, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Grace Maddux, sister Gail Dyess, son Brian Maddux and grandson Christian Lott. Gary grew up in Valley, graduated from Valley High School and attended Auburn University. He was a General Contractor, working under the company business name his son Brian founded. He was an avid Auburn fan and loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He loved to travel and spend time with his family. He was a devoted Christian and had served as a deacon in his church. The memorial service was held on Saturday, December 31 at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Lanett, Alabama. Visitation was held at 11:00 AM and the service followed at 12:00. This house has special meaning to the Maddux family as it was previously owned and renovated by Gary and Sharon before they sold it to the Johnson family. June W. Humphrey
Mrs. June W. Humphrey, age 86, of Riverview, AL passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her two sons, Richard Lynn (Linda) Humphrey of Valley and Timothy Wayne (Tracey) Humphrey of Riverview; her three grandchildren, Stephen Humphrey of Valley, Tia (Nathan) White of Beauregard, AL and Trent Humphrey of Riverview; her two great grandchildren, Lily and Liam White of Beauregard, Al; her sister, Joan (Clayton) Fullerton of Milton, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Lilly Gibson Wiggins; her husband, Richard Humphrey, and her daughter, Demarious Jackson. Mrs. Humphrey was born on June 5, 1930 in Riverview, AL. She was a lifelong resident of the Riverview area and a former member of the Riverview Methodist Church. She was a retired employee of West Point Stevens Riverdale Mill and had been in declining health for the past year. Funeral services were held at the graveside in Fairview Cemetery on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Rev. Bill Parker officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or to the Fairfax United Methodist Church in her memory.

Diane Clark Bence
Mrs. Diane Clark Bence, age 73, of the Autumn Cove Community in Anniston, AL passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at her residence. Mrs. Bence is survived by her son, Wade (daughter-in-law Suzanne) Bence; her daughter, Staci Bence; her granddaughter, Lydia Bence; and her brother, Alan Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bence; and her parents, Robert and Helen Clark. Mrs. Bence was born in Chambers County, AL on June 23, 1943. She was a member of the Shawmut Church of Nazarene. She served Christ and others faithfully and has been released into a perfect peace. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 11:00 AM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Reverends Tim Campbell, Bonnie Campbell, and Jim Hare officiated. Interment followed at Shawmut Cemetery. Glenda Sue Robertson Benefield
Mrs. Glenda Sue Robertson Benefield, age 66, of Lanett, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at the LaGrange Hospice. Mrs. Benefield was born on July 13, 1950 in Lineville, Alabama to the late Sanders Dee Robertson and Pearly Mae Edmondson Robertson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Retired SFC Hoyt Gay Benefield; brothers, Harold Robertson, Bobby Wayne Robertson, Wendell Robertson; sister, Mary Frances “Frankie” Robertson; brother-in-laws, Fred Prestridge, Cecil Hamby; special niece, Betty Dianne, daughter of Betty Bailey. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 11:00A.M. at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment followed in Resthaven Cemetery. Mrs. Benefield is survived by her three children, Marvin (Denise) Benefield, Fredonia, AL., Connie (Tim) Nixon, LaGrange, GA., LeAnn (Rick) Willis, Peachtree City, GA.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Prestridge, Macon, GA., Betty (Vince) Bailey, Carrollton, GA., Peggy Hamby, Valley, AL., Vicki (Bobby) Hanna, Lanett, AL.; brothers, James Robertson, Valley, AL., Johnny Ray Robertson, West Point, GA.; numerous nieces and nephews.
