Grand Marshal Selected for First Annual Mardi Gras Parade

Grand Marshal Selected for First Annual Mardi Gras Parade

Heroes don’t always wear a cape. They may not loom larger than life, leap tall buildings, or catch the bad guys. True heroes are the ones who say this is my community, and it is my responsibility to make it better. One such is example is lifelong LaGrange resident William Cornelius Herndon.

When not working in the family business at PC Screen Printing and Sign Company on Hill Street, Cornelius spends most of his free time volunteering with the La-Grange Shrine Club or the Elm City Masonic Lodge #544. However, it is the time he spends working behindthe- scenes that make Cornelius one of our community’s unsung heroes.

With a vast network of educators, coaches, and other community leaders, Cornelius is always on the lookout for ways to help children and families in need. If a child is without a coat, Cornelius finds a way to keep that child warm in the winter. If a child is wearing tattered shoes, Cornelius will make sure that he or she gets proper footwear. If a family cannot afford a team uniform, Cornelius finds a way to ensure that the athlete is able to participate properly suited for the game. Known by neighbors and friends as the “silent giver,” Cornelius Herndon gives selflessly with just one catch: he wants to remain anonymous.

Unsung heroes are the ones who keep our community running smoothly and efficiently behind the scenes, but go unnoticed, unrecognized, and unappreciated. They change our world for the better, but most of us have never heard of them. Unsung heroes are the role models whose remarkable acts of courage, compassion, selflessness, or perseverance make a profound and positive difference in a life or in the community.

The Krewe of Mask would like to honor Cornelius Herndon as one of our unsung hometown heroes by selecting him to be the Grand Marshal of this year’s Mardi Gras parade on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

Speaking with Herndon, he commented saying that this was a big honor for him and that he was overwhelmed. He loves New Orleans and John [Cashen] and would do anything he could to help him.
