WellStar CEO Wins Prestigious GHA W. Daniel Barker Leadership Award

ATLANTA – At its annual summer meeting, the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) presented its prestigious W. Daniel Barker Leadership Award to Candice L. Saunders, FACHE, president and CEO of Ma-rietta based WellStar Health System. Saunders was honored for her leadership of the health system and her commitment to bringing access to care to patients across the state.

Since Saunders was named to her current role in 2015, WellStar has grown to become the largest health system in Georgia. This growth has allowed WellStar to share its vision for worldclass healthcare with new communities by improving access to care and increasing quality.

Under Saunders’ direction, WellStar has been recognized as a leader in safety and quality measures and was listed on FORTUNE Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For® three years in a row. The health system is ranked as a top place for female executives by the National Association of Female Executives and is listed on Working Mother Magazine’s Best Companies list.

Equally as inspiring is Saunders’ dedication to providing high-quality patient care, which stems from her early background as a critical care nurse. Her ability to view health care from a nursing perspective means she is able to better empathize with caregivers on the floor and can provide team members with precisely the tools they need to succeed.

“Candice Saunders is leading others to extend the reach of health care, both through her work in the health system as well as through her incredible mentoring of up-and-coming leaders,” said GHA President and CEO Earl Rogers. “Her staff and community have greatly benefited from her dedication and love of health care. She is a most-deserving recipient of this award.”
