Cougars Score 38 And Lose, New Creation Christian Rolls

It was a night for the offenses.

The Cougars and Cavaliers combined for 82 points, and they kept the fans on the edge of their seats all night on Friday in the offensive onslaught at Lafayette Christian.

Winning on points and yards, however, was New Creation Christian Academy in a 44-38 football conquest against the LCS Cougars. Coach Nate Shaw of Lafayette Christian had a hard time swallowing this defeat.

“We moved the ball consistently. When you score 38 points you expect to win. Our quarterback play was good, and we put the ball in a lot of guys hands. But we had some defensive issues,” said Shaw.

He elaborated further.

“We had some big breakdowns, and we gave up two long conversions for touchdowns,” said Shaw.

The Cougars did have a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after a Jacob Lueken 12-yard touchdown run. That was the last Lafayette Christian lead of the game. New Creation Christian would outscore the Cougars, 30-8 in the rest of the first half.

Lafayette Christian did get a 49-yard touchdown pass from Landon Whitley to Cason Firth in the second quarter. Lueken, the senior halfback, would tack on a 49-yard touchdown sprint in the third period.

Whitley had a rushing touchdown, too, on a 10yard quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter. The Cougars also scored on freshman Amani Jenkins’ 65-yard kickoff return in the fourth period. Lafayette Christian sophomore tight end Nathan Fain would add a two-point conversion on a pass play from Whitley.

The Cougars played with confidence on offense throughout the game. Whitley scampered for 98 yards on 20 carries. Lueken ran roughshod with 97 yards on eight carries. Whitley also completed four of eight passes for 77 yards.

Lafayette Christian’s leading receiver was freshman Cason Firth with three catches for 74 yards. The Cougars still dropped to 0-2 on the season.
