Callaway Is Ranked Third, Troup Holds Down The 10 Spot

When it comes to high school football, West Georgia can bring the beef.

In this week’s ClassAAGPB Poll (Georgia Public Broadcasting), Callaway High is ranked third in the state. The Cavaliers, who are coached by taskmaster Pete Wiggins, are undefeated at 5-0 with wins over LaGrange, Handley, Ala., Columbus High School, Upson-Lee and the Harris County Tigers.

The Callaway Cavaliers are averaging 29 points per game and are giving up just 8.3 points per contest. Savannah Benedictine is No. 1 in the AA poll. The Cadets, also 5-0 on the season, are the defending state champions. Benedictine is scoring at a 48-point per game clip.

Behind Benedictine in the Class AA state poll is the Screven County Gamecocks, whom Callaway defeated in the state semifinals last season. In the MaxPreps Class AA Poll, Callaway is ranked ninth in the state. Benedictine is No. 1, and the Hapeville Charter Hornets from Atlanta are rated No. 2.

The Rabun County Wildcats are ranked third. Rabun County averages 38 points per game. As for the West Georgia football boys, Troup High is the No. 10 team in the state in the MaxPreps Class AAAA Poll. The Tigers are sitting high in the saddle with a 5-0 record. Tanner Glisson is their wellmeaning coach.

He has a plan that is working with the aid of Troup High offensive coordinator Kelby Holt. He is one of the best in the prep football business.

Troup High School is averaging 42 points per game behind running back Tyree Carlisle, senior quarterback Montez Crowe and junior wide receiver Jamari Thrash. The defending champion Cartersville Hurricanes, at 5-0, are ranked No. 1 in the state in the MaxPreps Poll. The Thomson Bulldogs, with a 3-0 record, are the second-ranked team.

The Ridgeland Panthers from Rossville are the third-ranked team in the state in AAAA with a 5-0 record. The Panthers average 42 points per game. Cartersville, in comparison, is good for 62 points per game. The Hurricanes are also giving up an average of 42 points per game.

And in the GPB Poll, Burke County is ranked third instead of Ridgeland. The Burke County Bears are 5-0 and are coached by Eric Parker.
