Drunk Driver Crashes While Being Pulled Over

LaGrange Police have charged a man with Driving Under the Influence after he crashed into a parked vehicle while being pulled over. Late Thursday night, around 11 p.m., LaGrange Police were on patrol in the area of Hogansville Road near Youngs Mill Road when officers received reports of a reckless driver traveling in their direction.

The suspect vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was spotted turning onto Youngs Mill Road from Commerce Avenue, at which point the driver ran over the pedestrian island in the middle of the intersection while navigating the turn.

Police then began following behind the vehicle and determined that the Toyota could not maintain its lane of travel. The driver repeatedly crossed over both the fog line and center line, so a traffic stop was initiated.

The vehicle then pulled into a driveway in the 300 block of Youngs Mill Road and the driver crashed into the rear of a vehicle parked at the residence.

Officers then made contact with the driver, later identified as Rodolfo Arana, as he began to climb out of the vehicle. Police say Arana slowly removed himself from the vehicle, with his pants unzipped, and he was barely able to maintain his balance.

Police explained the reason for the traffic stop, but it quickly became apparent that Arana could not understand much English. Arana was able to answer questions about how many alcoholic beverages he consumed, which he responded “two cervezas.” Arana also advised police that he did not have a driver’s license. Due to the language barrier, police did not request any field sobriety tests, but Arana agreed to take a portable breath test. The reading on the test then registered well past the legal limit for alcohol.

An unopened 12-pack of cold beer was also later located in Arana’s vehicle.

The parked vehicle that Arana struck had slight damage to the rear.Arana’s vehicle also suffered slight damage.

As a result, Arana, age 45, was arrested and transported to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office where he was booked into the jail charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol – Less Safe, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Driving without a License.

Arana is currently being held at the Troup County Jail on $2,500 bond.
