LaGrange Youth Council Members Participate in Georgia Municipal Association’s First Youth Council Symposium

Two LaGrange Youth Council Members participated in the Georgia Municipal Association’s inaugural Youth Council Symposium this past weekend.

LaGrange Youth Council members Harrison Lawson and Mizya Blackmon participated in GMA’s first annual Youth Council Symposium in Tybee Island.

Lawson, a senior at Troup High School, currently serves as the Vice Chair and Blackmon, a junior at LaGrange High School, currently serves as Historian for the LaGrange Youth Council.

At the Youth Council Symposium, Youth Council members from across the state participated in leadership training, panel discussions with local leaders, and debated topics of interest. Participants also had a roundtable discussion diving into what they would do if he or she were mayor.

The LaGrange Youth Council is an advisory board composed of local youth that provide advice and counsel to the local governing body. The Youth Council gives our local youth a more formal role in the local decision making process offering real world experiences with elected bodies. Twenty-four students from LaGrange High, Troup High, Lafayette Christian Academy, LaGrange Academy, and the Sound Doctrine are participating in the LaGrange Youth Council for the 2018-2019 school year. Members of the LaGrange Youth Council include Alex Wilson, Caroline Childress, Dazia Potts, Emma Strickland, Jack DeVane, Josh Smith, Kyla Bedingfield, Lauren Yarbrough, Libby Criswell, Lily Kamat, Lizzie Doerr, Lucy Alford, Lydia Alford, Luke Daniel, Mizya Blackmon, Olivia Smith, Bob Frick, Ruthie Kelsey, Samuel Shepherd, Sophie Myers, Sydney Anderson, Taylor Earnhart, Harrison Lawson, and Ujwal Modi.
