From Romping in the Yard to Battling Lyme Disease
Warm weather is here and we are oh so glad that it is, but at the same time there must be a wind of caution that breezes thru with the beautiful weather that is at hand. Along with the fun of warm weather also comes the fear of ticks on pets and in the grass.
One of the reasons for the fear of ticks is Lyme disease, which is an infection that is carried by ticks. The infected tick can transmit this disease by biting animals or humans. Some of the symptoms are headache, fatigue, fever, and/or rash.
This infection can spread to joints, heart, and nervous system if it is not treated. Most of the time, Lyme disease if it is treated with antibiotics, can be readily cured. Symptoms can sometimes linger for months or years after treatment. There have also been cases where there have been permanent damages from LD.
It is believed that a tick needs to be attached from 36 to 48 hours before it can start transmitting LD. If you spend a lot of time outside, or around pets, one of the best ways to defend yourself is to check yourself at least once a day so that you can remove any ticks before they become swollen with blood. Also watch the area where the tick was attached, to make sure that a rash, redness or swelling doesn’t occur.
Symptoms may not show up immediately so just keep a watch, and in the back of your mind remember that you were bitten by a tick so that you can tell a doctor about it if symptoms do arise.
