A state football ranking is just another badge of honor.
It is always a sense of pride for the school, the players and the lunch room crowd. State recognition has always been another banner to pin up on the wall.
A state ranking makes the Friday night heroes play a little harder. Callaway High has been there often. The Cavaliers are usually among the prep football elite in Georgia.
And, yes, Callaway High School is ranked fourth in the state this week in the Class AA poll, according to MaxPreps. The Cavaliers are 2-0 with wins over Troup and the Columbus Hardaway Hawks.
Callaway High was also ranked fourth in the state in last week’s state poll. As for this week, the Top 5 teams in AA include the Thomasville Bulldogs (2-1), the Rabun County Wildcats (2-1), the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes (3-0), Callaway (2-0) and the Bleckley County Royals (2-1).
Five of the Top 10 teams in the Class AA state football poll have one loss. Those five teams consist of Thomasville, Rabun County, Bleckley County, Dodge County and Swainsboro.
The Callaway Cavaliers are among the undefeated, however. Callaway is not the only LaGrange area team that is ranked in the state Top 25 either.
Troup High’s Tigers are rated in the MaxPreps upper echelon, too. Troup, although still winless at 0-2, is ranked 24th in the state this week in the Class AAAA state poll in Georgia.
The Tigers are in a hurry to flip the switch, too. Troup hopes to return to their winning ways of the past. Coach Tanner Glisson and the Tigers will square off with the 11thranked Hardaway Hawks (1-1) on Friday night at Callaway Stadium.
The game will commence at 7:30 p.m.
