Woman Charged with Stealing Sister’s Car
LaGrange Police have charged a woman with auto theft after she briefly stole her sister’s car during a late-night incident.
Tuesday morning, about 2:51 a.m., officers with the LaGrange Police Department responded to Dixie Street in reference to a stolen vehicle.
Officers arrived and met with the complainant, who stated her sister took her 2015 silver Ford Focus without her permission.
The victim stated she was unsure what time her sister took the vehicle, but the last time she saw her car keys was around midnight.
The victim explained that her sister is schizophrenic and has no driver’s license. She stated that her sister had not been taking her medication and had left the residence without her phone, leaving her with no idea where she was and with no way to contact her.
The suspect’s mother advised that she was constantly in and out of hospitals and was not getting the help she needed.
Family members agreed to prosecute at the suggestion of officers, thinking that the suspect would be helped by the Mental Health Court program.
After speaking with the family, police checked the surrounding area and spotted the stolen vehicle. Upon making contact with the driver, confirmed to be the victim’s sister, she admitted to taking the vehicle without permission and said that she knew it was wrong.
As a result, the suspect, age 26, was arrested and transported to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office where she was booked into jail charged with theft by taking – auto and was referred to Mental Health Court.
