Police & Sheriff’s Reports 02-17-2021

  • Sunday night, about 8:07 p.m., officers took a walk-in report at the LaGrange Police Department in reference to allegations of financial card fraud.

Officers made contact with the complainant, who stated that when he returned to his residence around 12:15 p.m., he noticed he did not have his wallet in his pocket.

The complainant stated he last had his wallet at Walmart on New Franklin Road. He advised that he was unsure if he left his wallet on the self-checkout register after purchasing his items or if someone stole the wallet from his pocket.

The complainant stated he later discovered two different fraudulent transactions on two different cards at two different locations. He noted that once he discovered his wallet was missing, he locked all of his bank cards. He then received an email indicating a transaction was attempted at Kroger on Commerce Avenue at 6:29 p.m. for a dollar and a second transaction attempt for another dollar at Sunoco at an unknown time.

This incident is still under investigation.

  • Sunday night, about 9:36 p.m., LaGrange Police responded to Walmart on New Franklin Road in reference to reports of shoplifting.

Officers arrived and met with Loss Prevention, who advised they were alerted by another employee regarding the shoplifting suspect, Carmen Brown. Upon making contact with Brown near the grocery side exit, she reportedly asked if she could go outside to get money to purchase the items—which she concealed inside a black backpack that she also did not pay for.

Brown was allowed to leave the backpack at the customer service desk and exit through the grocery side door. Once Brown attempted to leave the store, the alarms went off, at which time she was found to have concealed additional merchandise under her jacket.

Brown was escorted to the Loss Prevention office where she admitted to concealing the merchandise and stated she did not have any specific reason to do so.

Police say Brown concealed 27 items within the backpack and her pockets, totaling $483.98. All of the stolen merchandise was recovered.

As a result, Brown, age 42, was arrested and transported to the LaGrange Police Department where she was cited for theft by shoplifting – less than $500 and released.

Brown was also issued a criminal trespass warning banning her from Walmart at the store’s request.

  • Saturday night, about 7:50 p.m., LaGrange Police responded to the 700 block of Fourth Avenue in reference to a hit and run motor vehicle collision.

Officers arrived to find a black Chevrolet 1500 pick-up truck, and the other vehicle was no longer on scene.

Police spoke with the owner of the truck, who stated that she was not with her vehicle at the time of the collision. She stated that someone had backed out of the AAA store on Fourth Avenue and struck her vehicle that was parked on Juniper Street.

Police say the truck had a large dent and paint damage to the right rear fender and wheel well as well as some white paint transfer. The vehicle was still operational and was later removed from the scene by the owner.

This incident is still under investigation.
