Warren Temple Hosts Food Giveaway

Warren Temple United Methodist Church held a food drive on site Wednesday at 416 East
Depot Street in LaGrange. Warren Temple Pastor Carl Epps noted Wednesday’s food giveaway
is the first of many planned.

The giveaway was made possible through partnership with sister church First United Methodist.
Volunteers from both churches assisted in handing out approximately sixty boxes of packaged
foods obtained from Feeding the Valley. United Way and Get Troup Reading were also on site to
donate books to families in need.

Epps on Wednesday underscored Warren Temple’s history of giving back, while noting this
week’s event was the first in many months due to COVID-19. Volunteers were careful to follow
CDC mask and social distancing guidelines as they passed out food in a drive-thru manner.
Individuals unable to drive were allowed to walk to the location to obtain necessary food.
“Warren Temple has a good history of distributing food over the years,” said Epps. “The
Methodist Church is a connectional church, so we welcome the mission committee from First
United. Our churches have had a relationship over the years.”

Epps then noted that Warren Temple looks to continue the food giveaways on a monthly basis.
“They’ve done this prior to COVID for about six or seven years,” he said. “It’s something
needed. They had decided to do it the last week of the month because the flow of currency and
the availability of food is less available at the end of the month.”

First United Methodist Church members were happy to volunteer and help organize the event,
including active FUMC member Janet Wyche, who serves on the church’s missions committee.
For Wyche, Wednesday’s giveaway underscores nearly three decades’ worth of devotion of
giving back to those in need.

“I made a commitment to my God to feed one other person than myself for the rest of my life in
1994,” she said, noting that it’s a goal she first set after moving to downtown Atlanta. The
LaGrange native has since returned home, where she continues her mission work.
“Today, after moving back to my hometown, it is my birth church, the First United Methodist
Church of LaGrange, that helps me keep that commitment: God led, God fed,” she said.

The food is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The next monthly food giveaway is
currently scheduled for the last Wednesday in March. Those wishing to attend may walk or drive
to Warren Temple for assistance. All are encouraged to follow CDC COVID-19 safety protocols.
