Striffler Hamby

David Ridley Ayres

David Ridley Ayres, 69 of LaGrange, GA was “relocated” from this earthly home to his eternal home on Monday, March 22, 2021 from Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. Mr. Ayres was born August 11, 1951 in LaGrange, GA, son of the late Thomas Ridley Ayres and Maxine Anita Leach Ayres. He retired from the City of LaGrange Water Department. Mr. Ayres was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, where he had been the Soundman since the church began in 1978. He also traveled and operated the sound system for the Servants Quartet for a number of years. While his family was his greatest passion, he also enjoyed spending time at his mountain home in Robbinsville, NC. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James Calvin and Annette Rowe Foster; brother-in-law, Steve Farrar. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Nita Foster Ayres; daughter, Natalie Ayres Bonner (William Bryan); granddaughter, Megan Ayres Bonner; sister-in-law, Patti Foster Farrar; his beloved cat, Windy; other relatives and many beloved friends. No services are scheduled at this time and the family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers that all donations be made to the LaGrange Humane Society in memory of David Ridley Ayres.


Joel Davis Gladney, III

Joel Davis Gladney, III of LaGrange, GA passed away Saturday, March 20, 2021 at his residence. Mr. Gladney was born July 9, 1951 in LaGrange, GA, son of the late Joel Davis Gladney Jr. and Mildred Josephine Underwood Gladney. He received an Associate’s Degree in Forestry and proudly served his country for six years in the National Guards. Mr. Gladney was a Troup County Tax Assessor for a number of years and also was a Troup County School System Bus Driver until retirement. He learned a strong work ethic from starting work at the age of 9 years old, with his father in the family sawmill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joel Davis “Jaay” Gladney IV; sisters, Cheryl McGinnis and Patricia Whatley. Mr. Gladney is survived by his wife, Kathleen T. “Tess” Gladney; daughter, Tava (Keith) Stewart; grandchildren, Erin (Austin) Turner, Livi Stewart, and Lacy Stewart; several other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life Gathering was held Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at his daughter’s home, 117 Greenbriar Trail from 3:00pm until 7:00pm. A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.


Elgin Lamar Blake

Elgin Lamar Blake, age 46, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was born on July 26, 1974 in LaGrange, Georgia to Ernest and Lillian Blake. Elgin graduated from LaGrange High School in the class of 1992. He was previously employed at Shorewood Packaging Company, Tredegar Corporation, and RockTenn until his health declined in 2016. For many years, Elgin was a loved and dedicated member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, West LaGrange congregation, serving as an elder. Elgin is survived by: his loving wife of 22 years, Donna Andrews Blake; his parents, Ernest and Lillian Blake of Pine Mountain, Georgia; his brothers, Adrian Blake and his wife Carol of Columbus, Georgia and Stephen Blake and his wife Erin of Newnan, Georgia; two nephews, Marcus Blake and Tyler Blake both of Columbus, Georgia; three nieces, Danielle Blake of Columbus, Georgia, and Annica Blake and Gianna Blake both of Newnan, Georgia; a mother in law, Virginia Ray Andrews and brother in law Sanford Andrews both of LaGrange, Georgia; and his loving companion of six years, a rottweiler, Apollo, several uncles, aunts, cousins, worldwide spiritual family and friends. A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. The services will be live streamed via Zoom.


Frederick Lamar Jones Jr.

Frederick Lamar Jones Jr. of LaGrange, Georgia passed away on March 19, 2021. He was 91 years old. Fred was born in Booneville, Mississippi on July 22, 1929 to Fred L Jones Sr. and Bess Miller Jones. At Booneville High School he met Sammie Nell Fugitt, the love of his life. They were married on September 11, 1950. Sammie passed away in 2016. Fred, like his Father, was a graduate of Georgia Tech Institute of Technology. He received his degree in Industrial Engineering in 1951 and was a lifetime patron and supporter of his alma mater. He was with the General Electric Company for 37 years, holding assignments in Schenectady New York, Lynn Massachusetts, DeKalb Illinois, Fort Wayne Indiana and Atlanta Georgia. He served his country during the Korean War as 1st Lieutenant in the US Army. He returned to GE after service and spearheaded GE’s drive into expanded sales internationally. Fred traveled extensively to Europe, South America, Australia and the Middle East. His last assignment was Regional Manager for Motors and Controls in Atlanta, covering an area from Philadelphia to Miami and Memphis to New Orleans. After retirement he and Sammie moved to the Family Farm in Harris County Georgia where they lived for almost thirty years. They then moved to the Vernon Woods Retirement Community in LaGrange. After Sammie passed away Fred moved to an apartment at the Gables in Historic Hillside LaGrange. While living in Harris County they were both active in Harris County and LaGrange affairs. Fred was President of the LaGrange Rotary in their 75th year and he and Sammie were members of the First Methodist Church and Highland Country Club as well as many other civic organizations. Fred was recognized as an Honorary Alumni of LaGrange College after he and Sammie helped create the Fred and Sammie Jones Scholarship. Fred was also an avid classic car enthusiast. He restored Model T Fords and a Thunderbird while he was a member of the local car club. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 66 years, Sammie Nell Fugitt Jones, and his loving daughter Louanne. Fred is survived by his son, Lamar, and wife, Mary, and grandson, Christopher Woliver, and his fiance, Abby Jones, of Atlanta. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 27, 2021 in the Sanctuary of the LaGrange First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. John Beyers officiating. A private burial service will be held at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery at Jones Crossroads after the Memorial Service. Memorial gifts may be made to the LaGrange United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice in memory of Fred L Jones.



Jack Burns Wetherington, Jr.,

Mr. Jack Burns Wetherington, Jr., age 80, of LaGrange, passed away on March 19, 2021. Mr. Wetherington was born on December 26, 1940 in Tifton, Georgia to the late Jack Burns Wetherington, Sr. and Martha Sue Herring Wetherington. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Wayne Wetherington (youngest of four boys). He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military duty, he worked for over twenty years at Uniroyal as an Industrial Engineer and finished his working days at New Ventures in LaGrange. Survivors include his wife, Beverley Tankersley Wetherington; sons, Jack Burns Wetherington, III (Francis) and Robert Bartley “Bobby” Wetherington; brothers, Paul Wetherington (Susan) and Mark Wetherington (Glenna); sister, Dawn W. Williams (Sam); grandchildren, Kalieann Wetherington and Amelia Wetherington; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. A private family service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter Allen Myhand. Family will assemble at the funeral home at noon on Saturday. Billy Cosper, Jr.

Mr. Billy Cosper, Jr., 70, of Hogansville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 21, 2021, from Atlanta Medical Center. Mr. Cosper was born May 6, 1950, in LaGrange, son of the late Billy and Patsy Brown Cosper. A graduate of LaGrange College, he retired as operations manager from Glovis-Georgia in 2016, and was a member of Callaway Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and usher. Billy enjoyed working in his yard, loved to play golf, and had worked in the pro-shop at Callaway Gardens following his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Becky Cosper of Hogansville; his sisters and brother, Susan Brown of Prairieville, LA, Steve Cosper of LaGrange, Kathy Oliver of LaGrange; special sister in-law and brother in-law, Jennifer and Chris Knight of Hogansville; and a number of nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Brooke Oliver, Kristin Oliver, Carlyanne Knight and special nephew, Tyler Knight. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Cosper. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 27, at Callaway Baptist Church in LaGrange. The Reverend Brad Thompson will officiate and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville. The family will receive friends at Callaway Baptist Church from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Callaway Baptist Church Mission Fund are appreciated.
