Ephesians 5:16 (NKJV) “…redeeming the time because the days are evil.”

We are living in a time of uncertainty and a consistent barrage of bad news. Days like these have not just happened. They have been experienced since the dawn of creation (Gen.3). What the Bible terms as evil days are days of trouble, hard times, and struggle in the political realm and between nations. All of these things affect us in one way or another. They keep us glued to the television and our devices so that we stay up to date with the current affairs. In some cases, we become so inundated with information that we become numb to what is going on around us. The other extreme is we are entertained to sleep. Our culture has become an entertainment culture which lures us away from the things of God.

This is a struggle that I have faced throughout my life; Redeeming the time. Growing up in Pennsylvania it seemed like time stood still. Sheltered from the problems going on in the world by playing outside, riding bikes, and playing hide and go seek. Also, there were the Saturday morning cartoons. It was like that time would last forever. However that, as you know, is not the case. Time ticked on and things began clamoring for my attention. When I chose to give my life to Christ, it seemed like that amped the world even more to take my attention. Time was slipping away faster than I wanted it too. The Apostle Paul understood the importance of time for the people of God. The phrase “redeem the time” can also be translated as “make the most of the time” or “make the best use of the time”. It is time for us as believers in Jesus Christ to make the best use of our time these days. We are to live productive lives for the kingdom of God.

In the context of this passage in the book of Ephesians we are to live wisely in these days. Living in the wisdom of God includes being productive with our time and just simply not wasting it. This means taking the time to unplug from our devices, cut out the television, and spend time in prayer and the word of God. We are also to be more engaged in our community for the sake of Jesus Christ. Being a Christian is not a spectator sport, but is societal engagement on behalf of God’s kingdom. It is time to get more active in your local church and pray for loved ones to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Let’s not let the time we have left slip away. We must make the most of every waking hour we have for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God Bless!
